An Evaluation of Infrastructure-free and Infrastructure-based Indoor Positioning Methods with the Focus on Pedestrian Dead Reckoning

The expansion of location-based services (LBS) and their applications has led to a growing interest in localization, which can be done on the smartphone platform. Various positioning techniques can be used for indoor or outdoor positioning. Indoor positioning systems have been one of the most challenging technologies in location-based services over the past decade. Considering the increase of p...

Indoor/Outdoor Pedestrian Navigation with an Embedded GPS/RFID/Self-contained Sensor System

This paper describes an embedded pedestrian navigation system composed of a self-contained sensors, the Global Positioning System (GPS) and an active Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag system. We use self-contained sensors (accelerometers, gyrosensors and magnetometers) to estimate relative displacement by analyzing human walking locomotion. The GPS is used outdoors to adjust errors in p...

A Pedestrian Dead Reckoning System Integrating Low-Cost MEMS Inertial Sensors and GPS Receiver

The body-mounted inertial systems for pedestrian navigation do not require any preinstalled facilities and can run autonomously. The advantages over other technologies make it especially attractive for the applications such as first responders, military and consumer markets. The hardware platform integrating the low-cost, low-power and small-size MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) inertial...

Vector Graph Assisted Pedestrian Dead Reckoning Using an Unconstrained Smartphone

The paper presents a hybrid indoor positioning solution based on a pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) approach using built-in sensors on a smartphone. To address the challenges of flexible and complex contexts of carrying a phone while walking, a robust step detection algorithm based on motion-awareness has been proposed. Given the fact that step length is influenced by different motion states, an...

Accelerometer Based Joint Step Detection and Adaptive Step Length Estimation Algorithm Using Handheld Devices

—The pedestrian inertial navigation systems are generally based on Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) algorithm. Considering the physiological characteristics of pedestrian movement, we use the cyclical characteristics and statistics of acceleration waveform and features which are associated with the walking speed to estimate the stride length. Due to the randomness of the pedestrian hand-held ha...
